Watching the Chicago River go green!

Have you seen the Chicago River being dyed before?

Image by Ingi Finnsson from Pixabay.

It’s one of the traditions that define Chicago: the St. Patrick’s Day dyeing of the Chicago River!

Every year since 1962, the Chicago River is dyed Kelly Green (a shade of green that’s associated with St. Patrick’s Day) on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day.

After the muted greening last year (due to the lockdown), the greening is sure to be a major attraction this time!

Date: 10am on Saturday, March 12th.

Attending a St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Which St. Patrick's Day Parade(s) will you attend?

Image by Skyler Gerald on Unsplash.

Given the importance of St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago history and culture, is it any surprise that we have as many as three parades?

  • The Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade

    • Saturday March 12th, from 12:15pm, on Columbus Drive between Balbo Drive and Monroe Drive.

  • The Northwest Side Irish Parade

    • Sunday March 13, from 12pm, from Neola Avenue to Northwest Highway.

  • And finally, the South Side Irish Parade

    • Sunday March 13, from 12pm, on Western Avenue between 103rd Street and 115th Street.

The Chicago Parade is our largest (in fact, maybe the largest in the country) St. Patrick’s Day parade, the Northwest Side Parade is a community event, while the South Side Parade started out as a family effort in the 1980’s.

Which one/ones are YOU planning to attend?
